Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about SkillStory verified credentials.

What is a verified credential and how is it different from a certificate?
A traditional certificate is a PDF or paper document that can be easily faked or altered. A verified credential is a cryptographically signed digital record — its authenticity can be confirmed instantly by anyone with the verification link, and it cannot be tampered with after issuance.
What is an Open Badge and why does it matter?
An Open Badge is a digital image with embedded verifiable metadata — issued under IMS Global's Open Badge v3 standard. It can be earned, shared, and stacked across platforms and institutions. Unlike a simple image of a certificate, an Open Badge contains proof of who issued it, when, why, and to whom — all cryptographically secured.
Can students add credentials they earned outside SkillStory?
Yes. Students can import credentials from any provider — Coursera, Udemy, Codecademy, edX, LinkedIn Learning, and more — directly into their SkillStory credential wallet. All credentials are displayed in one place, whether issued by the school, a third-party platform, or SkillStory itself.
How do universities verify a student's credentials?
Each credential includes a secure verification link. Admissions teams, HR professionals, or any verifier can click the link to see the credential details, the issuing institution, the attesting educator, and a cryptographic confirmation that the record is genuine and unaltered — no account required, no back-and-forth.
Can credentials be shared on LinkedIn?
Yes. Students can share individual credentials or their full Skill Passport on LinkedIn, in university applications, on CVs, and anywhere else with a shareable link. The verification link travels with every share, so anyone viewing it can confirm its authenticity.
Do credentials expire or get locked to a school?
No. Credentials are owned by the student and remain accessible for life — regardless of whether the issuing school continues to use SkillStory. Some credentials may include an expiry date if the issuing institution sets one (e.g., annual certifications), but the record of having earned them remains in the wallet permanently.
